Get Your Onesies Ready!
A holiday tradition in Wilton Manors is the Wilton Onesie Wonderland bar crawl along The Drive. People come from all over South Florida and dress in fantastic onesies from all kinds of genres. You will see people dressed up as Care Bears, Tigers, Santa and their Elves, as well as so many other creative and fun onesies.
What’s a onesie, you ask? Traditionally, a onesie is an infant’s one-piece, close-fitting, lightweight garment, usually with sleeves, but that will leave the legs uncovered, with fastening snaps at the crotch. For adults, onesies were traditionally called union suits, which is a type of one-piece long underwear. Created in Utica, New York, it originated as women’s wear during the 19th-century United States clothing reform efforts, as an alternative to constricting garments, and soon gained popularity among men as well. These pajama-type clothes have zippers down the front and sometimes have snaps for a closure around the rear. Today, you can purchase onesies at many of the local shopping centers; Macy’s at The Galleria, Target at Coral Ridge, as well as online at Amazon, if you are looking for something a bit more outrageous and unique.
This year, the event will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2020, at 7:30pm to 12:30am. They will begin their bar crawl and move their way down through Wilton Drive’s many different watering holes, as they raise money for a good cause. This year’s event proceeds will be going to SunServe, whose mission is to provide critical life assistance and professional mental health services with an emphasis on economically disadvantaged, marginalized youth, adults and seniors in the greater South Florida metropolitan area. SunServe’s services are greatly needed in our community and they provide things like mental health counseling, drug & addition services, senior care, services for transgender people, as well as housing assistance for people living with HIV/AIDS, among others.
